Pligget Little to say for myself |
Wednesday, March 19, 2003 Short Order CookJust for a moment there, I was impressed by an MP. Regardless of what you might think of the man, Robin Cook's resignation personal statement yesterday was eloquent, gracious, forensic and fair.Ironically, it is only because Iraq's military forces are so weak that we can even contemplate its invasion. Some advocates of conflict claim that Saddam's forces are so weak, so demoralised and so badly equipped that the war will be over in a few days. We cannot base our military strategy on the assumption that Saddam is weak and at the same time justify pre-emptive action on the claim that he is a threat.Difficult to argue with. Then, today, we are brought back to Earth by the decision of Clare Short not to resign, despite saying at the weekend that she would, were the second resolution not to materialise. Her reason for staying? Apparently resignation would have been the easy way out... How can she possibly believe that anyone will take her at her word ever again? posted by Plig | 00:02 |
